Join us as we welcome guest speaker, Nicolas Ract from France. Nicolas will talk about an exciting new project to improve access to safe drinking water for Malagasy children. Nicolas joined Rotary in 2019, rapidly taking on leadership responsibilities for key actions in the Rotary e-Club France, D1780 (region around Grenoble, France). Jun 26, 2021 8:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Date: June 26, 2021 | From: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm
In recent events regarding "Asian hate crimes" in America, I would like to propose the 1st service project for our Rotary "Satellite" e-Club of Houston called "Lotus Project." We will be leading this service project in the Asian community to help promote peace and the environment. This is a great way to bring Rotary into the community and also it's a great way to recruit new members.
This event will aim to create a healing process for all Asian-American and it's also aligned with Rotary's two areas of focus; Promoting Peace and the Environment. The reason I picked the lotus is because it's very sacred in eastern cultures like Buddhism, Hindu and even Egyptians. For many, the flower represents purity, enlightenment, and even resurrection. Fun fact: the lotus is the national flower in Vietnam and India.
In Rotary, our Rotary District 5890 holds an event called Garden with the District 5890 Governor annually. This is where high school students from different Interact Clubs (Sponsored by Rotary Club) around the district will come out to help plant trees and clean the park to make it more beautiful again. After I pitched this idea to our district governor, Scott Rainey, he decided to relocate the project to June 26, 2021, from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm at Arthur Storey Park and plant 1,000 lotus seeds with us. We will have hundreds of high school kids coming out to clean the park as well. We just need to do the ceremony first and then anyone that would like to stick around to help clean the park may do so. I would also like to underline some of the positive objectives we will be promoting.
If you're interested in joining this project with our "Satellite Club," please contact me for information on the next Zoom planning session. If you know someone that would like to engage in this project, please invite them to join and contribute. I invite all nationalities to come out and support this event. This is the time to unify and heal the Asian community.

"The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud --- the obstacles of life and its suffering. ... The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. ... Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one." - Goldie Hawn
I'd also like to share an article about The Secret Meaning of the Lotus Flower since the event will be held in Asian-town. This is currently relevant and exactly what Asian-Americans need in America right now to unify and purify. Have a great day!
