Community Service focus for October and November is Food Donations.  Please donate a minimum of $10 of food items or a monetary donation to your local food pantry.  Become aware of food iinsecurity issues in your own community.

History of Veterans Day

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

The original concept for the celebration was for a day observed with parades and public meetings and a brief suspension of business beginning at 11:00 a.m.

The United States Congress officially recognized the end of World War I when it passed a concurrent resolution on June 4, 1926, with these words:

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and

Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and

Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that the President of the United States is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the officials to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on November 11 and inviting the people of the United States to observe the day in schools and churches, or other suitable places, with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.

An Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a) approved May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday—a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as "Armistice Day." Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Later that same year, on October 8th, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first "Veterans Day Proclamation" which stated: "In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans' organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose. Toward this end, I am designating the Administrator of Veterans' Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee, which shall include such other persons as the Chairman may select, and which will coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance. I am also requesting the heads of all departments and agencies of the Executive branch of the Government to assist the National Committee in every way possible."

This is a Board of Director's Meeting and All-Club Meeting beginning at 6:00 pm.All members are encouraged to attend and focus on club goals and activities beginning at 6:30 pm. It will conclude by 7:30 pm.  Please save the date!

The Rotary Club of Greater Houston Veterans has organized "Operation Turkey" to provide Thanksgiving meals in the Houston community to those in need.  There wll be opportuniities to shop, prepare/cook food, and serve meals.  More information and specific signups to follow.

Members may help prepare Thanksgiving dishes for the underprivileged in our local Houston community on Wednesday, November 23 OR help serve the Thanksgiving Day Feast on Thanksgiving Day.  Registration for time slots will become available close to work days.  

Benefiting foster care children, the Arts & Eats Festival will be held at the Watermark at Houston Heights, 1245 W 18th St. on Saturday, December 3, 2022 from 1 pm - 4:30 pm.  Wind Nguyen will be displaying his photography at one of the vender booths.  This event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Houston International.Tickets are available on Eventbrite for $35 per adult.

The anual Holiday Party will be held in the home of PDG Ed and Robin Charlesworth, 11407 Hylander Dr. in Houston, Texas on December 18th from 2:00 pm - 5:00 p.m.  Please bring an appetizer or a finger dessert to share with all guests.  Drinks will be provided.  Casual holiday attire.  Donations of warm winter jackets or blankets will be collected for the needy facing winter.

Our speakers will be high school students who are actively involved in Interact from Klein Forest High School.  Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 14 to 18.  There are 14,911 Interact clubs worldwide in 145 countries. In Rotary District 5890 we have 62 Interact clubs with more than 3,000 members.

Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They can draw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of

• Developing leadership skills and personal integrity
• Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
• Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
• Advancing international understanding and goodwill                                                              

Important training required for President's Elect to be trained for leading the Rotary club.

Join us to visit the George Bush Presidential L9ibrary beginning at 9:30 am. Our guests from Ukraine will learn about leadership and public service through the life of President George H. W. Bush and also contains a special section dedicated to former first lady Barbara Bush       As one of the top attractions in the State of Texas, the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, creates a museum experience that is both educational and entertaining for the whole family.  Tickets may be $20 for adults, yet could be reduced to $10 if we have a group of 20.  If you are interested, please register for the event online.  We will monitor the numbers and provide an update later on the price of tickets.

Texas Independence Day Celebration” is an annual two-day living history celebration on Saturday, February 25th on the 293-acre Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site to celebrate where 59 delegates bravely met in 1836 to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico in 1836.  The admission-free event features live music, food, demonstrations and sales of traditional crafts (blacksmithing, candle makers, woodworking, quilting and more), living history presentations, musket and cannon firings, pageantry, kids activities, museum exhibit and other commemorative programs. Historical reenactors set up a bonafide 1836 Texas Army camp where visitors can wander freely among the tents to learn how the soldiers and their families lived in 1836 so guests can experience life in Texas in 1836. You are invited to attend the Welcome Dinner to meet the Open World delegates from Ukraine.  This event is $25 for Rotarians and their guests payable at the door by cash or check.  

Join us to say "Farewell" to our Open World delegates from Ukraine. New friendships have been made and we hope to contribute in the development of future projects with the introductions made this week.  We pray for a safe return and continued safety as they return to a country in the midst of war.  More detalls to follow.

Join us to learn about "Lanterns for Light" with  guest speaker Protus Onyango.  Eradicate poverty in Kenya by supporting. This project was started to begin construction of the Lantern For Light Library in Sega, Kenya project to be completed 2021.  Additional projects include sanitary. pads for girls to remain in school, a special needs school, an urgent care unit, a. feeding program, and an e-learning center.

Earth Day 2023 Houston Concert starring Shake Russell from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm.  This fundraiser will support a new home for victims of sex trafficking, college scholarships, Harvest for the Hungry and projects in Ukraine.     We will also have a Silent Auction which will offer travel opportunities, collectibles, wine baskets, homemade pottery, designer handbags, and more.  Join us for an afternoon of fun, fellowship and great music.  Shake Russell is signing a guitar which will be auctioned and the lyrics to his hit "Travelin' Texas", the song written for a popular television program with Ron Stone on Channel 2.
